The Birth of the Hostel
Hostels appeared as a helpful alternative for young people, who wanted to travel
but had limited resources. A German professor by the name of Richard Schirmann started
the first hostel in 1909, due to the constant ramblings he took his students on,
through the German provinces. The idea caught on and years later, the necessity
to organize this movement that was sweeping through Europe was evident. The International
Youth Hostel Federation was founded and with more than 3 million members in more
than 75 countries, the Federation has successfully made Hostelling International
a name of repute and pride.
